A 3D-rendered, isometric office environment from a management simulation game. The office is divided into multiple sections with various employees working at desks, using computers, or engaging in conversations. Some employees appear to be resting, indicated by 'Z' symbols above their heads. The scene is set on a film studio backdrop, with lighting rigs and camera tracks surrounding the office. UI elements display game statistics, including in-game currency, popularity ratings, and a timeline set in January 2053. Employee names and icons hover over characters, representing their roles and tasks.

The Executive is a sandbox business simulation game that puts you in charge of a rising production company in the 1970s. Throughout your journey, you’ll produce movies, manage franchises, and (if all goes well) build a studio that can compete with Hollywood’s biggest players.

Its gameplay takes a lot of cues from Game Dev Tycoon—you mix and match themes, genres, target ratings, and budgets to create the perfect film.

Although the mechanics are simple (almost too simple—I found myself wishing for more depth), the real fun for me came from role-playing as different kinds of filmmakers.

For my first run, I went all-in on making critically acclaimed films instead of box office hits. My company won a ton of awards… but, we weren’t exactly rolling in cash. On my next run, I went full “Mike Bae” (my take on Michael Bay) and focused purely on explosions and big box office numbers.

Role play as your favourite directors

And that’s what I love about this game—it makes you want to keep coming back and experimenting. Next up, I’m thinking of running a horror-focused studio packed with slashers and cult classics.

If you’re into movies and want a fun, low-stress sim to mess around with, The Executive is definitely worth checking out.
